Summer Advanced Reading Assignment

Each incoming eighth grader of Good Hope Middle School who is scheduled to take advanced ELA for the 2023-2024 school year must read a fictional book of your choice over the summer.  The book must be a minimum of 250 pages and grade-appropriate. No elementary level books will be accepted. Your book must be parent-approved which means it will also be school-appropriate.

Written Assignment – Describe two conflicts in the book. These may be internal or external conflicts.  Explain the type of conflict and the character or characters involved. You should cite textual evidence as support when explaining each conflict. Your paper should be one front page in length. This discussion of conflicts will be due Monday, August 21, 2023. You will give this discussion as a “book talk” to your teacher.

F.A.Q.

  1. What are you reading in class? August – October (Flowers for Algernon), November – January ( Call of the Wild ), & February – April ( Sugar Changed the World)
  2. Where Can I find out ELA grades? I place grades in Webpams as soon as I can. You can see those grades in Student Progress Center on this website!
  3. Where can I find missing assignments? Missing graded assignments should be posted above & in Google Classroom! Make sure you turn in anything missed. This is the student’s responsibility !
  4. Do I need to purchase the book? The only book you should purchase is The Call of the Wild. This book can be checked out of the Library, but a personal copy is always best for annotating! ( The other two novels are in our binders. Each student gets there own copy).
  5. Any other questions can be directed to my email. breeves@opsb.net
