PEERS Program

I am writing to share exciting news from Easterseals Louisiana! In July, several of our staff had the opportunity to be trained to provide an evidence-based social skills intervention, Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS©). PEERS© is unique because it requires a parent to be involved and learn how to best support their child in developing friendships. Having one or two close friends has been shown to be predictive of successfully adjusting throughout life. Having a friend buffers the impact of stressful life events by reducing depression and anxiety and increasing independence and self-esteem.

PEERS© is effective for adolescents from 11-18 (in middle to high school) with a variety of diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, anxiety, depression and other social disorders. During the 14-week program, the adolescents will learn many things including:

·         How to use appropriate conversational skills including how to start, enter and exit conversations

·         How to find their source of friends

·         How to organize and have get-togethers

·         How to be a good sport in games/activities

·         How to handle arguments and disagreements

·         How to handle teasing, physical bullying and rumors or gossip

Currently, we are spreading the word about our new program. We want to reach as many families as possible. If you’d like to learn more about this program or would be willing to allow us to bring flyers to you that can be distributed to families or other organizations, please contact me to schedule a visit or coordinate the delivery of flyers.

I have attached the electronic PEERS© flyer, please feel free to share it.
